7 Ways to Teach Your Kids the Art of Giving!

Let’s start with one question! How often your kids refuse to share their birthday gifts with friends at a party? Many parents must have experienced their children getting possessive of their things, which they do not like to share or give to other fellow children. It is one trait that parents should really be worried of! No mother or father likes to see their child go uncaring about others as they grow up. Hence, inculcating the spirit of giving in the children should be at the highest priority in the parents’ agenda.

|According to Deborah Spaide, the author of ‘Teaching Your Kids to Care’ –

Children love being helpful (it makes them feel grown-up), and volunteering gives them the chance to experience the deeply rewarding payoff that comes from making someone else happy. |

Let’s take a look at 7 ways you can make your child go giving!

1. Begin with creating three piggy banks for your kids. Ask them to create them for themselves. As unless kids are involved themselves, they won’t find this interesting. Ask your kid to keep one for saving, one for spending and one for the purpose of donations. Let him or her decide the amount he or she wants to give to charity.

Save and share money

2. Organize a kid’s charity event, wherein you along with your kids can sell the products you both made together. This could be the cupcakes, pastries or knitted clothes etc. Now ask your kid to donate the earned money to help someone in need.

3. Make your kid’s birthday party a charitable one! Encourage the guests to bring non-perishable food items or clothes or toys that can be donated to the underprivileged children or street children. Make your son or daughter understand the importance of giving away on his or her birthday. Now, go to the orphanage or children’s hospital or any place you want to distribute gifts and let you kid give them all away from his or her own hands. This will make him or her happy!  In case of toys, ensure that they are in good conditions and do not hold any safety hazard to another child.

4. Your kid may not wear all the clothes lying in his or her wardrobe. Ask him or her to sort out the unused ones or the ones he or she likes to wear. Now, encourage your kid to donate the unwanted clothes to the one in need. This activity will form a habit of giving unwanted items to those who are in need of them.

Donate unwanted clothes

5. Undoubtedly, the value of time is precious. Giving away your time for the goodness of others can turn out to be a valuable teaching for your kid. You could cook a meal with your kids and then share it with your neighbors or help a senior person with gardening or cleaning the lawn. Keep your kid involved in the helping activities.

6. Keep extra pens, pencils, folders or papers in your kids’ bag and brief him or her that these extra items are to share with his or her friends, if they do forget them to bring along.

7. Last but not the least, walk the talk. You can be a good role model to your kid. Children often adopt the habits from their surroundings and most importantly from their parents. Hence, if they witness the spirit of giving in you, it is most likely that they adopt the spirit faster than you have imagined.

"If parents do it, children will do it."

Hope you will try these activities and raise a giving cum graceful child for future!

Give your kid the gift of giving!

Keep Your Kids Engaged In Summer Activities – Why?

Summer vacations are soon to arrive!! Have you planned your kids’ vacations yet?
How are you going to spend the coming 60 days with your beautiful children? No, do not think of let them spend all the time at home, watching TV, surfing internet or eating junk food, doing nothing at all as that is the most common way how average students spend their summer holidays time.

Rather, it is a good idea to engage your kids in activities that will help enhance their skill sets for future learnings.  Even two hours a day in some productive work will turn out beneficial for your children in the longer run.

In his book ‘foetus to fifth grade’Dr. David V Schapira, an internationally known physician who has written and researched extensively on parenting issues, emphasizes that parents should learn and imply the right way to engage with their children, no matter what their age. This becomes extremely important when kids are on summer vacations or when they remain at the home with parents for a longest period.

Why should let them indulge into watching TV or playing indoor games or having junk food during those days? Instead, it is advisable to go out and let them play while using their own imaginations.

This can happen only when you keep your kids involved in some activity of their interests.

For example, some kids may be very good in sports and show keen interest in playing badminton, tennis or cricket or hockey, while some would like to explore swimming, some would be interested in the arts and crafts. Those who do not want to do any activity must keep reading books on daily basis.

It is believed that when summer learning is missed out, it becomes harmful for children’s physical and academic health as they tend to forget whatever they have learnt during the course or less likely to be physically active.

Some known facts -

1.       According to an American research studies, young students have been witnessed a loss in learning if not engaged in some educational activities during the summers.
|Research spanning 100 years shows that students typically score lower on standardized tests at the end of summer vacation than they do on the same tests at the beginning of the summer.|

2.       Children count at high risk of obesity—gain weight more rapidly when they are out of school during summer break.

There are various factors that can determine whether the summer learning program is of the high quality or not. While choosing summer activities, consider these six elements.

1.       Activity that exposes your kid to new adventures, skills or ideas. That could be a nature walk, learning new skills in computer, visiting places of historical significance, attending live events etc. Travelling to a new place will add to their learning experience by exposing them to a new culture, a different language and new cuisines. This can get educative for them. You could also ask your kids to have a look on the map and direct you all.

2. Choose programmes that will help the kid in developing skills like reading, writing, science in a fun and engaging way.
| According to a University of Tennessee study, reading is important to the summer learning equation. Children who do not read in the vacation months lose two-to-three months of reading development. This creates a three-to-four month learning gap annually and causes the non-readers to fall behind.|

3. Find out what your kid loves doing or is showing passion towards. Then, enrol him or her in the course that will allow your kid to explore his or her area of interest. This activity could be anything from cooking to playing guitar or games etc.

4. You could also choose programs that will involve your kid in some group activity. This could be a social development program such as visiting orphanage and bonding with the underprivileged kids, or cleaning routine in your society where kids can participate etc.

5. Activity that may encourage your kid to inculcate healthy habits in order to achieve his or her goals. Make him or her involve in some outdoor activity.

6. High school kids can choose to do internshipsin some area of their interests like film projects, advertising, hospitality etc. to add to their learning experience on the grounds. Inspire your children to take the summer jobs.

|According to www.expandlearning.org, a research shows that kids who aren’t academically engaged during the summer start the school year behind where they ended the previous year. |

7. Those who are academically behind should chose these period of two months to improve on their weakest subject and reach the same level as of the other merit students. It is very important to keep the kids intellectually active during vacations too. For example, if they are weak in Mathematics or Grammar, they can pay attention to learning these subjects’ basics or tricks and practice.

Children are full of energy! After a few days of relaxations, they will be ready to take on the new challenge, which they can share with their buddies post summer vacations. Let them earn a story out of their vacations.

Hope, now you are clear why you should not let those two months of vacations go waste in gaining nothing in terms of learning and experiences!

Happy Parenting! :-)

Suicidal Tendencies in kids

Recently we came across a news in the morning papers that an 11 year old boy jumped from 10th floor of his building over a tiff with his mother .

You may read the whole story here.

This shocking incidence not only compelled us to have a deep thinking but also scared us to the core.

I avoided my 12 year son from getting hold of that particular newspaper and also discussed it with my spouse in hush tone in private. I feared that reading this episode might present the ghastly option of suicide in front of a soon to be teenager because statistics show that  1 in every 100, 000 kid in between 10 – 14 years commit suicide making this number the fourth largest cause of children dying in this age.

Of course suicide  is a topic no parent wants to contemplate but we do see glaring news of the same very now and then . These are people like you and me , kids from friends and family and when you come across such disturbing incidences from amongst people you have known closely , it does send down I chill.

In today’s time we pay so much attention to all round development of our children, their materialistic needs, educational requirements , whims and fancies. Yet either the kids seem to have low tolerance levels or we as parents are giving more than what is required. Even dangerous might be that we are overlooking the obvious changes in their behavior because we our disillusioned by being a good parent.

So please parents look out for these warning signs in children to deal with suicidal tendencies in kids it effectively

  • If you find suicide notes around the house , take them seriously
  • If you hear kids threaten you with the word , you ought to hear them out for what the matter is
  • Saying things like ‘ I ‘d better be dead’  or ‘ I wish I could disappear forever’
  • Writing stories about death, dying or suicide
  • Giving away their prized possessions to friends or siblings
  • Acting secretive
  • Being disinterested towards their dressing up, appearance or weight
  • Drastic change in their daily routine
  • Withdrawal from friends or family
  • Increased self harming incidents
  • Being accident prone suddenly

Being a parent you will be the best judge to take note any such warnings. There can be many triggers to developing suicidal tendencies :

Depression being the foremost reason of the same. Kids might get depressed owing to factors like failure in academics, high expectations from parents , sibling rivalry , non acceptance by friends , hormonal changes.

Difficulty in distinguishing fantasy with reality . Kids get lured by fictional characters from books or movies . They try to ape them but fail , be it gaining the attention of a girl in the class or achieving insurmountable success. The reality disappoints them and this may lead to development of suicidal tendencies.

Phobias and disorders: Children may over  period of time , due to circumstances , develop a fear of things like crowd , rejection , anxiety , loneliness . It just might just get too much to handle all of it together. Parents should strictly stay away from putting too much expectations and pressure on kids of this age.  At times, due to hormonal changes, kids between 10-14 years tend to become introvert. So they won’t be able to share their feelings with you and your suggestions or scolding may have deep impact on their mind provoking them to take the extreme step.

Conclusion

If you suspect that your teenager is suffering from depression, talk to him. May be you don’t have to prod into the reason right away , but just be there with him and talk a lot about things which will take his mind away from topics that may be disturbing him.
Be gentle and offer support with any problem that he discusses  with you eventually. If they feel that you are going to lecture them once they share their problem , it will get difficult to get into their minds. Look back at your yester years and try to be very compassionate towards your teenager. They are coping up with way to many issues, so help them relax.

Dear readers , we wish the best of health and safety of your kids.

Raise hands for present Maam !

With session breaks getting over its time for a new school year. Whether your kid is going school for the first time or getting promoted to the next grad , Back to School time is always a big transition. So it’s always a good idea to prepare your kids for this a few days ahead ….and of course yourself too !

Early to bed early to rise:

Bedtime is the first routine that gets upset with the onset of holidays. You needn’t be very hard with this but it’s good to reintroduce the normal schedules for this at least in the last week. Taking them out for an early morning walk or cycling or park visit can be the motivation to get them out of bed early even on holidays.
Normalizing the sleeping patterns is essential  else the kids might feel tired and drained out in the early days of school due to sudden onset of early rising and hectic school routines.

Start talking about the new grade:

New grade will obviously tougher in terms of syllabus and study patterns. To add to these, introduction of new teachers and if class reshuffling happens then kid might face emotional rupturing too because of loosing of old friends .  In this situation it helps talking to them in a sublime manner about things they can look forward to. Help them in setting new goals for this year and ways in which you will celebrate them. Like maybe striving for a particular role in the annual day function or the fun of learning the third language that has been introduced in this academic year.

Get organized well in advance :

Stationary , books , bags  , uniforms…..a long list to be ticked off. Get your kid’s 100% participation in doing all this . If he gets to choose his school supplies, it will double his excitement to go for the new academic session. He will look forward to use all his  belongings.

Study time :

For kids who get regular home work from school , make an half hour slot for studies a week or two prior to the reopening of school. For the elder kids you may get a practice book of the previous grade to finish in this time. This will reinforce the topics that have been studied and prepare them to have regular study hours before they feel pressurized with the higher grade studies.

Get together :

An amazing relaxation trick could be organizing a big family or friends dinner or picnic before the school reopens. This way the kids will have a nice finishing to their holidays and also meet their cousins and friends to discuss about their school and new grade. You may host a role play game picking up characters or stories from chapters of the new course books.

All said and done , the most important thing to do as parents is to BE POSITIVE with their children about the coming year. They are excited as well as apprehensive about the new session. If you walk hand in hand with them in praising them for each of their accomplishments as well as supporting at the time of failures , every grade year will be something they will look forward to !

All the Best ...
